About 11 years ago we added electronic access control systems to go along with the alarm systems and locksmithing especially for our current accounts so they could get all three parts of security under one roof.
We have worked with many different manufacturers from all over North America. As the cost of systems has reduced, the functionality and expandability has greatly improved, all due to the constant changes in technology. Systems available today integrate many parts of building management under one control mask with features like environmental control, closed circuit TV management and recording, card access and 2-way intercom using computers and network technology.
Simple systems start at one door with some form of locking device operated by a control unit that user input information from keypads to swipe to touch to smart buttons to proximity to bio technology readers of various types. Bio readers now include sound, finger or hand print scanning and retinal scanning as the most commonly used input devices. Larger systems can control thousands of doors all over the country either by phone lines or now the internet on secure VPN networks.
All of these improvements have allowed security managers to better control employee and public access to local and remote sites from guard offices.
